Honouring Inqo’s First Chairman - Professor Jakes Gerwel 1946-2012

Professor Jakes Gerwel was the first chairman of Inqo. He was born on a farm neighbouring Kuzuko and then rose to high office becoming an inspiration to many.

Jakes Gerwel was Chancellor of Rhodes University, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities at the University of the Western Cape, Honorary Professor in the Humanities at the University of Pretoria, and Chairman of the Human Sciences Research Council. He was Vice-Chancellor and Rector of the University of the Western Cape from 1987 to 1994. From May 1994 to June 1999 he served as Director-General in the Office of President Mandela and Secretary of the Cabinet in the Government of National Unity.

He was non-executive chairman of Africon Engineering International, Brimstone Investment Corporation, Life Healthcare, South African Airways and Media 24.

He chaired the Boards of Trustees of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Mandela Rhodes Foundation, the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation and was vice chairman of the Peace Parks Foundation.

Chairman of SpringHill Management, a fund management company specialising in biotech and social venture capital investments. He is a partner of a number of social impact funds including Springhill Equity Partners, Novastar Ventures and Garden Impact Investment. He is the co-founder of the Transformational Business Network, trustee of the John Templeton Foundation and advisor to the J&J Impact Ventures. He is the inventor of sheep monoclonal antibodies and a Pro-Chancellor of Surrey University and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine. He is a former board member of the Saracens Rugby Club.

Chris Bertie - Finance Director

He is a chartered accountant, a former partner at Ernst & Young (South Africa)and Managing Director of Halcyon Hotels, a company that operated hotels and restaurants in the Western Cape. For over two decades, he has been a consultant to the wine and hotel industry in South Africa.

David Louw

He is a chartered accountant with wide experience in the hospitality, media and agriculture industries in South Africa. He was previously Group Financial Manager at Southern Sun Hotel Holdings Ltd, General Manager of Picardi Hotels Ltd. and Protea Hotel Group and CEO of Radio K-FM.


Investment Associates

James Tan - Investment Associate

James holds a BA in Business Studies and an MSc in Conservation and Land Management. His past experience includes website management and digital marketing for a start-up ecommerce company and an adventure tourism company and working in the hotel and tourism industry in South Africa. He also writes as a freelance journalist covering environmental and conservation issues

Investment Associates

Brad Barritt holds a MSc in Business Management. He has roots in Zimbabwe and Malawi and has lived and worked in South Africa and the UK. He is the co-founder of Tiki Tonga Coffee Roasters, a thriving startup with retail, wholesale and event interests. His other business interests are property and private equity, with a particular interest in Social Impact investment. He is also a professional rugby player and captain of Saracens RFC. As a player, he has represented England, British Lions and the Natal Sharks.
